NCYW at NGHS - A Report

Great to hear from the NCYW Year 12 group at NGHS - they have been doing some brilliant work for International Days observed by the United Nations. See their report below!

Since joining National Council of Young Women in September 2016 as a year we have tried to raise as much money as possible for deserving causes.

We started off fundraising early September for the 11th October International Day of the Girl. For this we decided to do cake sales to raise quick money within our peers, selling tray-bakes such as Mars Bar Cake. In addition to this we raised money through showing the movie ‘’Inside Out’ charging students, predominantly Year 7, 8, and 9 £1 entrance fee as well as sweets and popcorn. In addition to this we also had a calendar game, whereby students could pay £1 to buy a date and get a £5 prize. In total, we raised £215.82 for International day of the girl.

After this event we then helped raise money for the UN International Human Rights Day, members of NCYW sold brooches to students either £1 or £2, to help not only raise money, but also awareness. The money from this went to Equation. Our next big idea was to raise money through getting other students involved, ideally Year 7 students. From seeing the refugee crisis we decided to merge our two ideas, and created a friendly fundraising competition: whichever class raised the most money won a huge jar of sweets. Members of the Christmas themed fundraising fairs! In these the students; sold candy canes, had a tombola, ran a lucky dip, and sold cakes. Overall, the Year 7’s raised £118 for the refugee crisis. Also for the refugee crisis we had two big raffle boxes which we charged students for tickets, raising £45 in total.

Our next venture is to raise money for International Women’s Day. We want to show educational movies to students such as, ‘The Suffragettes' . In addition, we aim to include the junior school in fundraising, such as having a games and cake sale or a teddy day. Finally, organising an Easter egg hunt or an Easter activity to raise money. Overall, we have set ourselves a minimum target of £100 to raise for International Women’s Day.

We have had great fun raising money for NCYW and deserving causes, and will continue to do so over the upcoming months.
